The Cover Letter: Top Seven Tips

Never, ever, ever send a resume without a cover letter.
We know the cover letter is the most dreaded, most daunting part of the job search, but if you follow our tips, you'll be pounding them out effortlessly, and with a smile on your face. (Really.)

1. Tell 'Em What You Want.

What exactly are you looking for? Are you responding to a posting for a certain position? Are you seeking an internship for college credit? Are you simply inquiring about opportunities, present or future? Lay it on the line.

2. Tell 'Em How You Heard.

Was it an ad on a Web site? A newspaper listing? Word from a friend? Let the company know what or who led you to take action.

3. Tell 'Em Why You Like 'Em.

What about this company or this position intrigues you? Do a little research, and demonstrate that you have some knowledge of the company and the industry. "Recent legislation requires utility companies to produce a quarter of their energy from renewable sources, and it would be exciting to be a part of that growth ..." blah blah blah ... you get the idea.

4. Explain Your Qualifications.

You don't need to be as specific as on your resume, but point out the experience you have that directly relates to the position. "Before a rate increase took effect, I spearheaded a public relations effort for Utility Company X."

5. Show a Little Personality.

Don't be too casual, but don't be ridiculously formal, either. Show you are enthusiastic about the company and the position. "Ever since I was young, I've been singing along with your television ads, and I've long admired Company X as one of our region's best corporate citizens."

6. Check and Double-Check the Posting!

Make sure you are addressing the specific requirements. If they want to know a date you'd be available, be sure to tell them.

7. Indicate A Follow-Up.

Often, people use a simple sign-off, such as, "I look forward to hearing from you.' That's not enough. Let them know you'll be in touch: "I'll plan to call you in the next two weeks to see if you'd like any further information."

See? That wasn't so bad.
