Fresh, New, and True: Work by Emerging Artists (March 11-May 14, 2010)
There is something comforting in the work of the “tried and true” late career artists who have refined their work and come into their own voice through years of art-making. However, in this exhibition we are opting to bask in the fresh, new exuberance of “untried” youth! We will be presenting the work of twelve emerging artists from our area. Join us in celebrating the excitement of artwork that is sometimes experimental, often subversive, frequently unpredictable, but always true.
Ripple Effect: The Art of Creative Influence (March 18-May 14, 2010)
Since 2005, Sarah Brokke has participated with the Duluth Art Institute as both an exhibiting artist and as a teacher in our education program. Her classes have garnered a loyal following of students who have, through her tutelage, become artists in their own right. While these newly formed artists have their own artistic voices, they also have been influenced by the distinct style of their teacher. The present exhibition will highlight Sarah’s work alongside the work of her most advanced students and present what could well be called the “Brokke School” of Painting.
Oulu Glass: A Family of Artisans (March 4- May 30, 2010)
Anton (Jim) and Susan Vojacek are a husband and wife team of artisans who, along with their daughter Tonja and grandchildren Stanzia and Riley, create works of art using glass as their primary medium. The team also includes Allen Erickson, a former student. This exhibition will include collaborative work—a strong tradition in the world of glass artistry both now and in times past.
