September 18th and 19th 2009
I had the Ultimate DuSu weekend this past weekend. first it started with Friday and the DuSu launch party. My friend Larry and I set up the tiki torches. It was fun to help in anyway I could. Larry was great at setting up the torches by the way. The night was an amazing night of great music and great networking. I didn't do that great at DuSu feud. The firedancers were absolutely amazing. Lynhurst was a great group. That group can really get the night hopping. I had a great time seeing people that I only know from facebook and people have known forever.
The next morning, I had eight people from Twin Ports Action Coalition join with the other marchers in Superior to march about health care for all. We were there and got awesome shirts from Reed Graphics that said our message. A lot of people had the DuSu stickers on as well. We marched from the Superior library to the Courthouse. Great news coverage by the way. When we got to the Courthouse, Assemblyman Nick Milroy started the rally portion. Northern WI is very lucky to have great lawmakers in Madison. While we had the rally, some idiot wanted to come and try to get on the news. He parked and yelled out his window while his kid was sitting there. If you plan to protest a protest, at least have the decency to leave your kid with someone else. Anyway, the rally was a blast. It is always great to make some noise for our beliefs.
After the rally, we went back to Duluth and a little later in the day went to the Project Homeless Connect Sleepout. This event raised money for the Duluth Project Homeless Connect event in October. We were sleeping outside at the College of St. Scholastica. My group had boxes and we put stickers on them and taped it up good. One of our younger members made herself a entryway to her cardboard palace. At 8 pm all the participants of the sleepout were in the Mitchell Auditorium. We saw a reading of the Habitat play. The play was written By Rachel Johnson and is a documentary piece about homelessness in Duluth MN. The play was so moving. We went to different workshops and seminars all night. The first round of discussions were about homelessness from three perspectives (Youth, Adult and Family). The final discussions of the night were Politics, Faith and a showing of the San Marco video. I was in the Politics discussion. It was great to see so many younger kids there. Patrick Boyle, Beth Olson and Dan Hartman all slept out for the night with Dan having a cardboard box with a bad roof. This was a great night. Some of my group didnt exactly sleep but they were still tucked in their boxes.
This was a DuSu weekend. It was a great time.
