The Entrepreneurial Dream

A unique city with a strong entrepreneurial spirit, Duluth can offer opportunities for those dreaming of owning their own businesses.

Where are the opportunities?

What kind of business is growing in this region?

According to the 2006-1016 Projected Percentages of Growth Fields in the United States, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics state growth in the following areas:

.

53.4%     Network Systems & Data    Communications Analysts

.    50.6%    Personal & Home Care Aides

.    48.7%    Home Health Aides

.    44.6%     Computer Software Engineers

.    41%    Veterinary Technologists/Technicians

.    41%    Personal Financial Advisors

.    39.8%    Theatrical Makeup Artists

.    35.4%    Medical Assistants

.    35%    Veterinarians

.    34.3%    Substance Abuse/Behavioral Disorder Counselors

Duluth demographics support these projections. Our population is aging (census.gov) and the need for businesses supporting older citizens is substantial. Technology has been an area of  Duluth's  “focus” for the past ten-plus years, and finding a niche in this market would be welcomed. In this economy, the need for personal financial advisors is growing at an astronomical pace.

Service providers within the region reach out to those with the entrepreneurial dream by offering support in business planning, market analysis, and creative financing strategies.  Networking opportunities abound throughout the many associations and organizations across the Northland, including groups focusing on “youth” (18 ‐ 40 year olds).

Everyone is familiar with the mantra “location, location, location”.   Finding just the right space-- whether retail, commercial, office, manufacturing, or warehouse— is possible with the assistance of one of many local resources.  An ideal resource to help you achieve your dream exists around every corner.

A common starting point in any business endeavor involves determining your field of interest, completing training (formal or informal), and locating an existing business in the industry.  If you can volunteer or find an internship,  bide your time, gain some wisdom,  and your business dream may become a reality.  Several entrepreneurs that I work with have goals of positioning their business for the future ‐ even after they retire.

The opportunities are here…do you have the entrepreneurial dream?
